We are preserving a special night landscape

Reach for the stars!

When did you see last the Milky Way with your own eyes? When did you last experience a truly dark night? In many places it is no longer possible to properly experience stars and constellations. The Eifel National Park is one exception in the densely populated state of North Rhine-Westphalia: in 2014, the conservation was certified as the first International Dark Sky Park in Germany by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA). We are working conscientiously to protect the starry night sky. It does not just benefit species and climate protection, it also provides truly special natural experiences.

  • The twinkling starry sky is a truly special experience!

The next stage will see the Dark Sky Park become a Star Reserve, which, in addition to the National Park with its strict light pollution regulations, will also incorporate a 15-kilometre strip around the National Park’s borders.

The astronomy workshop “Stars without Borders” organises regular events at the Vogelsang observatory.

The observatory is situated on the Internationalen Platz square in Vogelsang – near road 266 between Schleiden-Gemünd and Simmerath-Einruhr. Visitors can park at the Walberhof car park, which lies next to the roundabout. From there, it is a 450-metre walk over the roundabout, along the road in the direction of Vogelsang until you reach the observatory on your left.

Phone +49 (0) 221 44900586 to find out about offers, such as star walks, and to register your interest. These events are subject to the weather and only take place if the sky is clear. Please wear warm clothing, sturdy shoes and insect repellent!

The dates of the astronomy workshop can also be found in our digital events calendar.
